Heartfelt Charity Quilt Along: Buttercup Quilt Block

Buttercup Quilt Block

The Buttercup Quilt Block is a block that comes together very easily. Most of this quilt block is assembled with straight seams. So even though the pattern calls for you to make 5 blocks these will all come together quickly.

Alterations

In the previous blog post, I mentioned that I was making alterations but I never mentioned what they were. I will be adding three additional quilt block designs that were not included in the free pattern.

I will be adding a column and row to the overall quilt. Making this quilt a much bigger quilt. I would give you information on the new size of the quilt except I haven’t decided what kind of border I want to do. I keep going back and forth between a pieced border and a solid border.

I will also be making a pieced backing but won’t be using the free pattern provided by Fat Quarter Shop. Once I get to the step of adding the backing I will go into more detail.

Additions

Aside from the purchase of the Heartfelt Quilt Kit. I did purchase a fat quarter bundle of Beautiful Day, yardage for binding,  more of the beautiful day background, and 108” wide yardage of Beautiful Day for backing.

Tips and Tricks

So when I got to this quilt block I decided I only needed to make 4 quilt blocks. If you are making all 5 just follow the cutting instructions. As I said previously this quilt block is straightforward.

The only part that you will have to be careful about is when you go to add fabric A to the bottom of the heart block. I recommend pinning fabric A down to the heart block. This will keep the larger square from shifting while you sew.

Bonus

You will have to draw on the wrong side of fabric A and stitch on the line. Then I also sewed a 1/2” away from the same drawn line on the side that will be trimmed away from the heart block. If you do this to all the quilt blocks you will have 10 unique 5 1/2” HST blocks without trimming. I only have 8 because I made one quilt block less.

When I went to trim these down I wanted to be very intentional. You can just trim them any way you want. I just may be a little more particular. I lined up the smallest strip on the HST and made sure that the seam had the 1 1/4” line on it before I trimmed. Be careful of orientation if you do that because you will have strips running in two different directions. After trimming my blocks measured 5 1/4”.
