What are the standard quilt dimensions for a twin, queen, or king-size quilt? I can say there are standard-size mattresses but quilts…not so much. There is a range of standards but it is more dependent on the personal choice of the quilter.
So how do you know if a quilt is a queen or king? It all depends on the drop and tuck and how much you want in your drop and tuck. What’s that?
Drop refers to how much of the quilt hangs off the sides of the mattress. Tuck refers to how much quilt is used to cover your bed pillows. I like to think of it as tucking your pillows in for the day.
Let’s get into the math and let me explain.
Standard Mattress sizes are
(Width x Length)
Crib – 27” x 52”
Twin – 39” x 75”
Double/ Full – 54 x 75”
Queen – 60” x 80”
King – 76” x 80”
California King – 72” x 84”
Now that you know the standard sizes for the mattresses you can get an idea of where we are headed. The tuck measurement is usually an additional 10” and doesn’t change. The drop of the quilt does change and is dependent on how much extra quilt you would like.
As an example, a smaller queen-size quilt isn’t enough quilt for me and my husband. He is an incurable cover stealer. When I make a queen-size quilt for us it needs to measure at least 90” wide by 95” long.
If you want a quilt size reference guide I would highly recommend the All-In-One Quilters Reference Tool. So much amazing information packed into this book it is worth getting.

Otherwise, I will leave a very simple reference below.
Quilt Size Reference Guide
(Width x Length)
Crib 35”- 42” x 50” – 58”
Twin 59” – 79” x 85” – 105”
Double/Full 74” – 94” x 85” – 107”
Queen 80” – 100” x 90” – 110
King 96” – 118” x 90” – 112
As you can see there is no standard but a range that allows for personal preference and creativity of design.
