Quilted Lullabies

Scrap Busting Projects: By Color

Although I don’t have any plans of my own to make a two-color quilt. A scrappy two-color quilt would be an amazing way to use up a lot of your fabric scraps.

This is the way to go if you are looking through your fabric stash and find yourself with a large pile of one color.

  • Red and white quilts have a warm inviting country feel.
  • Blue and white quilts have an elegance that reminds me of the blue and white porcelain pottery.
  • Green and white quilts remind me of the Irish. Although you don’t have to be Irish to make one.
  • Yellow and White quilts remind me of sunshine and summer.

Instead of going through all the colors with a white combination let’s get into what would make a successful two-color scrappy quilt.

This principle is essential to know about all scrap quilts not just the two-color variety.

Just add more!

Yep! The less is more principle is silly talk regarding a scrap quilt. In the example below, you see 15 different red fabrics. Most of the reds are very similar but can you spot the pink fabric?

Maybe you can now that I have mentioned it. Maybe you have an extremely trained eye and spotted it right away. In either scenario, since the pink is a dark pink it probably won’t stick out among the red fabrics.

In this next example, you will see 30 different blue fabrics. Twice as many as in the example above. These blues vary from light blue to dark navy.

If you made an entire quilt with just these fabrics do you think it would matter if that one odd color of blue is next to another brighter blue? NOPE!

This is because the more fabric you add the more you are spreading out the intensity of that fabric.

What if you were to have 50 or 100 different blue fabrics it now doesn’t matter what one specific color of blue you have chosen. In essence, you are creating a whole new blue color with the mixture of blues you have put together.

Have you heard of this principle? Does this make sense? Have you made a scrap quilt with 50 or 100 different fabrics? Let me know in the comments below.
