A quilting gift guide helping the non-quilter give an amazing gift to their quilting loved one.
There are so many different kinds of quilters out there with their own quilting tools and fabric they prefer to work with. From an outsider looking into the quilting world, it can seem overwhelming. What in the world do you gift to a quilter if you don’t know the ins and outs of what they actually want or need?
This quilting gift guide is for you. This list will apply to most quilters no matter what kind of quilts they enjoy creating. Find a the perfect gift that says I love that you quilt without becoming an expert in the details of quilt making.
These items are ones that I use and believe in (if the exact item is no longer available I have tracked down a similar item). There are some affiliate links in this post. If you decide to click one and make a purchase I might receive a small commission based on the purchase. This supports my corner of the inter web which will keep this blog ad-free. Thank you!
This is a smaller gift but all quilters will nod and say yes we buy this all the time. A gift that says I will make sure you can keep on sewing.
If you notice that the quilter you wish to gift to hand sews. Most of the time they use these needles to hand sew the binding to the quilt. Hand-sewing needles will wear out over time. Grab some for your quilting friend and they will be thrilled.
This gift is great because some quilters (including myself) will stretch out the life of their rotary blades because rotary blades aren’t as cheap as universal needles.
You will have to find out the size of the rotary they use. If you are worried about nosing around in the quilt room and getting caught most quilters use a 45mm rotary.
4. Pins
This item is often neglected because we don’t consciously think that our pins are wearing out. A new set is a great reminder that we can toss out the old and bring in the new sharp pins. There are two kinds that I will list below both will be heat resistant.
5. Seam Ripper
Although not our favorite quilting notion it is nice to have a few of these on hand. There are a few types of seam rippers that have different features. The one linked below has a larger handle which doesn’t stress your hand as much to hold.
6. Thread
We always need more thread whether we piece quilt tops or we are quilting them. Thread is essential to what we do. White thread is generally used for multiple purposes so you can’t go wrong choosing it.
7. Erasable Pens
A Frixion pen is a heat-erasable pen that has many applications for quilting. Buying a package of these pens will disappear quicker than you think.
Some quilters however dislike this product and refuse to use it. If you think your quilting loved one might be in this camp you can always purchase the water-soluble pens. The ink from these pens disappears with water and is great for marking a quilt top with no chance of the ink coming back.
Every time I get a package of these clips I am so thrilled. These have multiple uses and they do on a very rare occasion break. So getting more of these is a welcome sight. Plus I mean how can you have too many?
9. Alphabities
Alphabities are a great quilting notion that helps quilters keep track of their quilt project. Quilters usually have multiple projects going at the same time so even if you are giving a duplicate this is a great gift.
10. Design Boards
This quilting notion is for those who seem to get their quilt blocks turned around while sewing. This small portable design wall is great for making sure you sew each of your squares together correctly. Give the gift of using the seam ripper less.
11. Seam Guide
There are many seam guide tools available on the market. Instead of picking one, I will link below all the seam guides that are available to my knowledge. There isn’t one that is better than the other. A seam guide simply helps the quilting loved one get that perfect 1/4” seam they are always striving for in their piecing.
Not directly related to quilting but also genius. These clips attach themselves to the table and provide a drink holder. This is a great gift for the quilter who never has enough table space.
13. Quilting Themed Gifts
There are so many quilt-themed gifts in the market. You can get shirts, thermal cups, jewelry, socks, bags, puzzles, stickers, and so much more. These are fun gift options that any quilter would be happy to receive.
14. Binding Babies
These adorable tools help keep binding nice and tidy before you attach it to your quilt. Even if they aren’t in use they are an adorable addition to your quilt room.
15. Gift Card from the Local Fabric Shop
This is a great all-purpose gift option. Your quilting friend can grab whatever it is they need from their local fabric shop. You will quickly become their favorite enabler.
16. Sew Steady Table
This is a custom extended table for a quilter’s sewing machine. This clear table is great for piecing and domestic quilting on your home machine. It can also double as a Lightbox by placing a bright light under the clear extended table. If this sounds like the perfect gift you will need to find out the exact model of sewing machine your quilting loved one uses.
17. Portable Speaker
This gift is great for the quilter who enjoys listening to podcasts, music, or an audiobook while quilting.
18. Specialty Quilt Boxes
These boxes aren’t like a monthly subscription box. They are one-time boxes that are themed in some way. Usually, they are themed around a Holiday but not always. I will list a few places that offer these types of boxes below.
Fat Quarter Shop usually offers the Jolly Box just before Christmas. At the moment of posting, this isn’t available at the moment. Check back often or sign up for their email list so you don’t miss this specialty box.
Keepsake Quilting usually offers the Keepsake Quilting Greetings and Gfits Box. At the moment of this posting, this isn’t available. Check back often or sign up for their email list so you don’t miss this specialty box.
19. Rolling Cart
A rolling cart for the quilt room will greatly help the quilter who wants to get organized. It also gives them the option to easily work in another room. It does roll after all.
Upgrading your quilter’s seat cushion is the gift of comfort. Make sitting at the sewing machine for hours much more comforting.
21. Stella Go Lamp
Lighting is so important for hand sewing whether binding or English paper piecing. This particular lamp is great for its portability since it has a charging base and can be carried from room to room.
22. Pay for a Quilt Class or Quilt Retreat
This will probably be the most expensive gift option but also the most exciting for the quilter you are gifting to. A quilting class to learn something new or a retreat is such a fun experience. Your quilting loved one will meet fellow quilters, have lots of uninterrupted sewing, and so much fun.
