This hidden star quilt block is truly hidden. Changing up the colors for this quilt block could really make the star pop or make it disappear. Poof!
With this quilt block, the most challenging section of this block is the square in a square unit you have to make. The stitch and flip method is used to make this block. Go slow take your time with this one.
I show in more detail how to have success when using the stitch and flip method in another blog post. Click the link below to see that blog post.
Tips and Tricks
Two things to have success with sewing this unit is to make sure that when pinning your smaller square to your larger square your fabric isn’t peeking through on the back or front before sewing.
Lastly, make sure to sew from corner to corner when sewing this block.
Double-check this by pressing the corner before trimming. This will allow you to see if the square that you stitched fills the corner of the block.
Once you have verified that the square you just sewn has filled the corner of your block trim away the excess fabric.
Quilter's Note
Once you have trimmed your excess fabric but before stitching another corner press the seam open. The overall quilt block will come together easier if these seams are pressed open.
This quilt block also has some HST’s (half square triangles) units. Instead of following the cutting instructions for these blocks, I cut the squares to make the HST 1/8” bigger.
This will give you the option to trim your HSTs down to the exact size. An extra step yes but one that gives you accuracy.
After making these block units follow the pressing and sewing instructions written in the Summer Moon BOM book. You now have 3 beautiful hidden star quilt blocks.
