Sweethearts Quilt Block

Heartfelt Charity Quilt Along: Sweethearts Quilt Block

The Sweethearts quilt block is just two adorable heart blocks. Since I am making my quilt larger than the original pattern released for the Heartfelt Charity Quilt Along this Sweethearts quilt block is the only one that I will need to increase how many blocks I make.

I chose the same fabric listed in the pattern but decided to add two additional fabrics. I chose light pink and light beige colors since these are the colors least represented in the original pattern. This way I won’t have too much of one color in this quilt.

Tips and Tricks

These quilt blocks have a lot of stitch and flip corners. The smaller B squares listed in the pattern can be difficult because they are so small. Don’t let that scare you off though.

Fabric cutting accuracy is key to sewing stitch and flip corners. I will leave a link below where I go into detail about fabric cutting accuracy.

You will want to pin these smaller squares down to your rectangles. Check after you have pinned and make sure you don’t see the opposing fabric peeking through when you look at the back or front of your fabric.

If you see fabric peeking through unpin, and adjust the square so you no longer see the opposing fabric. Most of the time it just takes a little scooch with your fingers to get it just right.

Stitch and Flip corners

Bonus Blocks

With the stitch and flip corners you make from the fabric A squares, there is enough room to get bonus HSTs. Just like in previous quilt blocks from this series you will want to draw a line on the wrong side of the fabric 1/2” away from your stitch line.

Your drawn line should be on the side that will be trimmed away later. After sewing your stitch and flip corner shown in the pattern sew on the 1/2” line that you drew. This will give you bonus HSTs blocks.

Bonus Half Square Triangle quilt blocks

If you do this to all of the heart blocks for this pattern you will have 20 – 2 1/2” HSTs. Since I have added an additional quilt block I have 24 HSTs. Getting extra quilt blocks with very little extra effort is what makes these bonus quilt blocks.

Donation

This is a free pattern available from Fat Quarter Shop. This quilt along was to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and South Texas. However, since this charity time has lapsed I have left a link below to donate nationally.
