Buzzard's Roost Quilt Block

Buzzard’s Roost Quilt Block – Summer Moon

The buzzard’s roost quilt block is just so fun. I knew when I saw this block I was going to add something cute to the center of these blocks. The Lollipop Garden fabric line from Lella Boutique comes with sweet quotes.

Tips and Tricks

1.  In order to make this happen, you will have to fussy cut the center. This means you have to find the center for each of these quotes. This will help to find which quote fits best to replace the fabric A squares mentioned in the book.

Then bravely cut the fabric where you need it to be. It is good to cut your block a little bigger than you need so you can then work with an easier small fabric square. In the end, the fabric looks like swiss cheese after it has been cut into.

2.  The next thing to change was the cutting instructions. I prefer to make my flying geese with the 4 at a time method. I love this method for sewing flying geese.

It will…

  • Keep you from wasting fabric as there is just small trimming
  • Have your flying coming out just perfect every time

My favorite tool to create these geese is by Deb Tucker. She has created two rulers called Wing Clipper 1 and Wing Clipper 2. With just these two rulers you can make ANY size flying geese you will ever need.

When you purchase these rulers they also come with cutting instructions for all the sizes of flying geese. So you can completely ignore the cutting instructions in the book and follow the cutting instructions included with each of the rulers. You will need both rulers to sew all the flying geese in the Summer Moon book.

However, if you don’t have a tool that allows you to make these geese 4 at a time. No Sweat!  Just take your time and sew these geese with care and follow the cutting and sewing instructions in the book. Sewing isn’t a race so just slow down and enjoy making these gaggle of geese.

3.  No matter which method you choose press your seams open for the flying geese. This will keep the seams from being too bulky and potentially prevent cutting the nose off of some geese.
