Lighthearted Quilt Block
The Lighthearted Quilt Block is the first addition to this quilt that is outside of the free pattern offered by Fat Quarter Shop. This quilt block comes from The Bonnie and Camille Quilt Bee Book. The best part is that the size of this block doesn’t need to be altered to fit into this quilt.
Alterations
For the pattern changes, I made to this quilt I only needed 4 of the Lighthearted blocks.
I purchased the Heartfelt Quilt kit from Fat Quarter Shop but I also purchased a fat quarter bundle of Beautiful Day fabric.
I went through this bundle to fill in the color gaps that I would have had if I had just used the quilt kit. This way my hearts are all the same color with a gradient look.
Tips and Tricks
The construction of this block is really fun and simple. The quilt block instructions in the book are spot on. I didn’t need to make changes for this quilt block to come together looking great. The pressing and cutting directions on spot on.
Make sure to pin your larger back square to your gradient heart block before you sew. This will keep the quilt block from shifting while you are sewing.
Bonus
With this quilt block just like the last previous Buttercup Quilt block, you will get what I call bonus blocks. These bonus blocks will look just like the previous bonus blocks. I will go over again how to get these lovely HSTs.
You will have to draw on the wrong side of fabric A and stitch on the line. Then I also sewed a 1/2” away from the same drawn line on the side that will be trimmed away from the heart block. If you do this to all the quilt blocks you will have unique 5 1/2” HST blocks without trimming. I have 8 bonus HSTs quilt blocks.
When I went to trim these down I wanted to be very intentional. You can just trim them any way you want. I just may be a little more particular. I lined up the smallest strip on the HST and made sure that the seam had the 1 1/4” line on it before I trimmed. Be careful of orientation if you do that because you will have strips running in two different directions. After trimming my blocks measured 5 1/4”.

I love quilt books that have a sampler quilt in them. It feels like I am getting multiple patterns for just the cost of the book. What are some of the quilt books that you can keep going back to for the patterns?
