The Four X’s Quilt Block is a really cute star block. Changing just the colors of the inner part of this star would give this quilt block a whole new look. You could make a quilt with just this star and make each block look different by changing the color placement. I bet you those stars would look as if they twinkled.
Tips and Tricks
When cutting the fabric for the HST blocks. Cutting them 1/8” bigger will give you a little extra wiggle room for error. This also will have you trim down your HST.
If you prefer not to trim down you can sew the HST as it is written in the book. Just watch your accuracy so your blocks come out to the correct size.
The hourglass unit you make doesn’t need any cutting alterations. The pattern is written so you trim down the hourglass units.
Nifty Notions
The half-square triangle Block Lock ruler is a great tool not just for trimming HST but also for hourglass units. Just be sure to press the last seam you sew for your hourglass to the side.
This will make trimming down the hourglass unit almost the same as trimming the HST block. There will be a video tutorial explaining how to do this coming soon on my social media platforms.
Press on!
Following the pressing instructions in the book will allow all your seams to nest nicely. This is great for the medium size and large quilt blocks.
The small quilt block will be more difficult because the seams will be so large in comparison to how small the quilt block is. If you don’t like that you can press all the smaller block units open.
Then when you sew your nine units together following the pressing instructions will still allow those seams to nest.
This quilt block would have so many different looks just by changing up the fabric. That is one reason why I like this quilt block so much. What are some of your favorite star blocks to make? I will be waiting to hear what your favorite star block is to make.
