Setting Up a Small Quilt Room

Setting Up A Small Quilt Room

Want to set up a quilt room, but your space is small? Today is the day we discuss how much space it will take to set up your quilt room and start sewing.

What must be set up at all times?

Setting up your quilt space starts with deciding what you don’t want to move regularly. There are three things that you don’t want to move every time you want to sew. Your sewing machine, cutting mat, and ironing board with iron. These things are the cornerstones of any quilting room.

The idea behind this is that you want to quickly jump in and out of your quilt room with almost no setup time. You only have ten minutes? You can easily sew, cut, or iron for ten minutes and then walk away knowing a little bit has been accomplished.

What about the rest of the quilting supplies?

All your other quilting supplies can be set aside in a storage area like a closet and pulled out as needed. Realistically, you won’t be able to sew multiple projects. Only keep your current quilt project out, along with the smaller quilting supplies needed to complete the quilt top.

How to maximize your floor space

The next thing to think about when setting up your space, especially if it’s small, is the arm length rule. Everything must be within arm’s length of the centerpiece, which is your sewing machine.

For example, in my space, my cutting mat is to the left of my sewing machine, and the ironing board with the iron is on my right. Keeping my sewing machine as the center of my space reduces how much floor space I am taking up.

This could potentially change if you are a left-handed quilter. If this is the case, try switching what is on the right and left of you. Have your cutting mat to the right of your sewing machine and your ironing board with the iron on the left.

I have a link below to a list of the basic quilting supplies needed. This will help you understand what supplies you need and roughly how much space you will need.

Speaking of space, I measured my own quilt room set up to determine a general guideline for the floor space required. My measurements came to 6’ x 5’, which is a rounded-up measurement. This means 30 square feet is all that is required to create your own quilting area.
