Quilting Goals of 2026
Hello Quilting Friend! I am back, and it’s a fresh New Year with all new possibilities ahead. Let’s start the new year with how to achieve your quilting goals. Goal setting allows you to set your sights on what the coming year will look like. What does a quilting goal look like?
Quilting goals can be very specific or broad, and neither is wrong. The best kind of goals is one that blends your desire and realistic expectations.
Types of Goals
If your goal is task-based, for example, your goal could be setting a designated space for quilting. If you have many of those goals, focus on making these tasks smaller. The wonderful gift of these types of goals is that they are one-and-done.
If your goal is focused on personal growth, for example, you would like to learn a new quilting technique by the end of the year. This type of goal is about putting in the time to become good at the new skill and technique.
Allow for a small amount of time per week to dedicate to this new technique. Depending on the difficulty of this new skill or technique, dedicate a small amount of time per week to this endeavor. This allows you to still work on quilting projects you enjoy without burning out or frustration.
Fit It to Your Life
Make the goal specific and realistic. Easier said than done for me, for sure. This all begins with when and what time you have in your day to quilt. The specifics of this are important. Doesn’t matter what your goal is; if you don’t have a day or amount of time to quilt, it won’t happen.
Grab a calendar and brainstorm when specifically is the best day and time to quilt. In years past, I was able to quilt in the late evening and very early morning. Depending on your season of life, find the specific days and times that work for you.
One Last Thing to Consider
There is one factor left after you have set your goal that could destroy the very progress you wish to see. These are the everyday easy distractions. Distractions come in all forms. This takes looking at yourself in a mirror and understanding what fuels you and what distracts you.
Take the time and clear away the distractions. I will focus on one in particular that some people struggle with their phones. If your phone tends to suck you in and keep you distracted, most phones have a Do Not Disturb and/or Focus mode. Personalize these modes to help gain the self-control to keep yourself from being distracted.
If you find yourself being pulled into your phone and can’t seem to stop the doom scroll, you have some options. Android and Apple have modes that can restrict how much time you spend in any one app. Android has Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls, which you can customize. Apple has Screen Time that lets you set restrictions on how much time you spend on any one app. Use these tools to your advantage.
Making This Personal
Now that you have taken care of the distractions in your life. Time to look at what fuels you. For example, I enjoy a good audiobook. The settings on my phone allow for my audiobook apps to be limitless, whereas other apps are limited. For you, it could be that you would like to listen to music. Reward yourself while dedicating the time to your goals. Win-win in my book.
